‘Adapt or Lose’ and Other SEO Advice from This Google+ HOA

“In our industry, if you can’t adapt, you lose.” Bruce Clay was the guest on an HOA yesterday that one commenter called “Absolutely the best HOA I have heard all year about #SEO.” That link will bring you to our recap and top takeaways from Bruce’s video chat with Ben Fisher and Stephan Hovnanian.

Replay the HOA on YouTube, and click through for a time-stamped play-by-play in the description provided by the Google Plus Business Spotlight show host.

Some highlights for me:

  • What will drive AI development? “We’re going to see speech interaction drive artificial intelligence, not the other way around.”
  • On the complexity of Internet marketing today: “One person could be your Internet marketing department 10 years ago. You did the Google thing. Bought some pay per click. Social wasn’t a big deal. Now social is an industry. SEO is more technical day-to-day. Pay per click — you can no longer have a human manage your bids. As a result, Internet marketing can’t be managed by one person any more.”
  • On the interdependence of digital marketing disciplines: “Internet marketing, which is all of the main disciplines — there’s six of them — all are becoming far more technical deeper. They’re going down, far more technically. And they’re broadening and becoming interdependent upon each other, all at the same time that all this technical information is becoming dependent upon core marketing knowledge.”

And one more nugget of wisdom plucked by Paula Allen:

Hi Virginia,

Glad you mentioned issues on mobile devices. Unfortunately, I’m browsing at the moment on mobile device and im trying to save the page for offline reading, not on this particularlly page but it applies to other pages. Any tips on that?

Sef,

Pocket is a great tool that allows you to save articles for offline reading. Personally, I love it and use it all the time. Get it here (free): http://getpocket.com/

Great information and awesome quote. Very true that if you can’t adjust and adapt you will eventually fail. However, once you understand how the search engines work you can set yourself up for a long time. There will always be temporary loopholes, but once they close the search engines tend to always come back to and favor this: the person who has the most high quality natural looking links WINS.

It’s hard to take this article seriously when your website has not adapted yet – responsive website.

Hi “maneuver up”, BruceClay.com is responsive. Although we do find some tricky instances that we have to troubleshoot from time to time. If you find a page or site feature that doesn’t display properly on mobile, we’re eager to know about it to fix. That’s one thing to note about responsive design — it’s a constant process of issue identification and clean-up. While the site is responsive, every piece of media, from a simple image, to more complex forms, is an element that needs to be fitted for mobile. We’re making changes and updates daily.

Awesome quote right there. Couldn’t agree more with this post. Our industry is highly dynamic – and if we’re not flexible, we’re basically doomed. Personally, right now we’re putting all our cards on teamwork, experience, and plenty of learning.

Thank you so much for sharing our discussion on your blog, guys, and most importantly, for the outstanding insights on the state of SEO and internet marketing going forward.
